About the job

This position acts as the Diversion Specialist working with individuals and families that are experiencing homelessness or at imminent risk of becoming homeless in the urban core of Grand Rapids.  The Diversion Specialist will work with community partners in helping to identify and assist these individuals and families. Responsibilities include the ability to assess the needs and barriers that lead to the person’s housing crisis, identify community resources and support services, engage and educate community members on issues around homelessness.

Job Plan


Diversion Relationships (those in need)

* Build relationships with individuals and families that are not accessing the homeless crisis response system. Provide solution-focused case management, with a goal of connecting these individuals to resources that will assist in ending their homelessness or divert them from becoming homeless

* Act as the diversion specialist for urban core of Grand Rapids and maintain appropriate number of case openings for purpose of receiving diversion referrals.

* Available to guests for spiritual mentoring and prayer, if desired or requested



Diversion Relationships (partners)

* Work closely with homeless school liaisons in identifying and assisting families that are at risk of becoming homeless or currently experiencing homelessness

* Regularly meet and develop relationships with community partners including churches, schools and social service agencies. Plan and execute cooperative action to directly impact those who are at risk or who are experiencing homelessness

* Meet and develop relationships with leasing agents and landlords who have properties in outlying areas


Network / Communication

* Daily: Virtual Case Manager and Homeless Management Information System (information sharing)

* Monthly: COC Outreach Team meeting: participate as an acting member

* Work within Community Housing Connect referral database

* Attend regularly scheduled meetings with the other communities Diversion Specialists



* Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent years’ experience in a related position

* Bi-lingual preferred

* Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite

* Ability to learn various technology platforms

* Ability to work independently and with little supervision

* Ability to communicate our vision professionally and passionately

* Highly organized, detail-oriented, able to manage multiple projects

* Able to vary job tasks as needed throughout the workday

* Able to travel within the county


Working Conditions

* Regular standing, walking, climbing, crouching, bending, pushing, or pulling

* Understand, speak, read, and write fluent English

* Ability to communicate verbally and to accurately hear, with hearing correction

* Ability to see 20/20, with vision correction

* Able to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally, and up to 35 pounds regularly

* Able to use fine motor hand functions

* Frequently exposed to varying temperatures from below 32 degrees to above 80 degrees
